Case study: Yilli Rreung Housing Colin Tidswell

Colin Tidswell, Chief Executive Officer, Yilli Rreung Housing

Yilli Rreung Housing is a not-for-profit focus on housing management providing affordable housing and community housing based in Darwin.

I've had previous exposure to international students so I know they are highly motivated and have the ability to contribue new ideas and skills.

International students are restricted to working 40 hours a fortnight during their study periods amd occasionally this can be a challenge but for the most part we can work around it. We also work with students during assignment and practicum periods to help them manage their studies.

I’d certainly look at hiring an international student again to fit certain positions. They offer a diverse range of skills and knowledge.

Student: Pauline 'Sam' Samanta

I am from Indonesia and I chose to study in Darwin because it is near my home country and Darwin has similar weather.

I am currently studying a Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood and Primary at Charles Darwin University.

My work at Yilli Rreung Housing gives me different routine, I get to meet Territorians and people from different fields. It also gives me more local references which could help in the future employment.

The workplace can be challenging sometimes are there are different rules and regulations that I need to learn and understand but I have certainly learned to adapt and adjust. It’s a great experience in an Australian workplace.
