Sarah Lloyd, Manager, Murraya Children's Centre, Leanyer

Murraya Children’s Centre is a not-for-prof it Early Childhood education and care centre based in the Northern Territory. We are part of the Territory Child Care Group which has Family Day Care, School Aged Care and Centre based Education and Care. Murraya Children’s Centre has 17 educators with a range of qualif ications and experience. We have found that international students have applied for advertised positions and they are our preferred employment option for part-time positions. We have employed international students who have been undertaking education and care related studies as casual employees for the duration of their study period. We have found them to be reliable, with a high work ethic and motivated to seek professional development opportunities. An additional benef it is that during
semester breaks students can  work additional hours which can fill in for other educator’s annual leave. I would def initely hire an international student again; we get the benef it of a student who is motivated to learn and contribute to the centre and children’s development and learning, and embrace cultural connections and perspectives.

Student, Georiga James, England

I am studying a Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care at the Australian Careers College. I am originally from Brighton in the United Kingdom and first travelled to Australia as part of my adventure seeing the world. After travelling around the majority of Australia I arrived in Darwin and instantly felt like I was at home which was a beautiful feeling after being away from the UK and my family for an extended period of time. Working in my chosen subject’s industry has given me great insights into the childcare industry and how it operates from day to day. The work enables me to experience what is expected of me personally and within my future job role. Working at Murraya alongside my studies has allowed me to understand the requirements of my course better and has made vital links between written and practical work. I have faced no challenges working in an Australian day care centre but instead have embraced the learning opportunity and enjoyed taking on new experiences adding to my already existing knowledge in the industry.
