Meet Ruth

Hi everyone, my name is Ruth and I am born and raised here in Darwin with an Indonesian background. Before I became serious about studying here’s a short story about the life of Ruth; I commenced working for Skycity Casino Darwin, Evoo Restaurant when I was 18 years old, then slowly began to progress and work my way up. Four years had passed and I became the Manager for Evoo Restaurant. During this time I made many friends of different cultural backgrounds that influenced me to become passionate about travel to see what different countries had to offer.

I travelled extensively travel through South East Asia then along the east coast of the United States of America, wandered my way around Spain, toured through France, and then jumped on the train to view the sights of the United Kingdom.

After my travels I decided to begin studying and started my long and exciting next chapter in life with a Bachelor of Psychological Science at Charles Darwin University.

I enjoy studying at CDU as it has a wide range of facilities that can be accessed at any time; the multicultural communities found on campus are very welcoming and the selection of courses available is great. Throughout the two years of studying I was fortunate enough to receive two scholarships through CDU: the New Colombo Plan (NCP) where I was given the opportunity to study in Indonesia in the Regional Universities Indonesia Language Initiative Program Program. Whilst I was in Indonesia I was immersed in the culture, lifestyle and most importantly the language. I had six weeks of intensive learning in Lombok (Universitas Mataram) and Kupang (Universitas Nusa Cendana).

I am currently working full-time within Northern Territory Government as an Administration Officer and juggle part-time study commitments. I love Darwin, as there is a great sense of multiculturalism. The amount of people you meet that come from diverse backgrounds, the exposure of different cuisines and all the cultural festivals held in Darwin is what makes it special.

In my spare time I’ve participated in the Candy Jam Fun Run, Persona Indonesia, taken language courses at the Adult Night classes at Casuarina Senior College as well as volunteered with the induction day for the Northern Territory Cattlemen’s Association –Indonesia Australia Pastoral Program.
