The Northern Territory recognises the importance of innovation and supports a range of research and innovation initiatives. These include a range of education and research centres, such as the Northern Institute, the Menzies School of Health Research, the Australian Centre for Indigenous Knowledge and Education, Desert Knowledge Australia, and the North Australia Centre for Oil and Gas.

PhD candidate at the Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods, Amanda Lilleyman won the ConocoPhillips Environment Award for her research into migratory shorebird ecology at Darwin Harbour. Amanda’s achievements included becoming a recipient of the 2013 Holsworth Wildlife Research Award and organising the 9th Australasian Shorebird Conference in Darwin in 2014.
